Bernard Cornwell

Bernard Cornwell writes historical fiction.  His depiction of battle scenes is superlative.  He has several series that are great.

The Saxon Tales (aka the Last Kingdom series)
This series tells the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, which has been made into a TV series, the Last Kingdom.  Uhtred was an English boy who was kidnapped and raised by Danish Vikings.  He eventually enters into the service of Alfred the Great.

The Sharpe Series
