The Black Walnut Manhattan
February 4, 2020
The Black Walnut Manhattan is another variation of the Manhattan. It uses Amaro Averna and walnut liqueur rather than vermouth. I am indebted to one of my daughter-in-laws for introducing me to this drink.
Preparation:
Put ice in a martini glass and fill with cold water. Let it sit while you make the drink (3-5 minutes) to chill the glass. Empty the martini glass when the drink is ready.
Ingredients:
Bourbon
Averna Amaro Sciciliano
Walnut liqueur (The Bear uses Nero Walnut Liqueur)
Bitters (angostura or cinnamon are good choices)
Mixing the drink:
Fill a shaker with ice cubes
Add 2 drops of bitters
Add one shot of Averna Amaro
Add one shot of walnut liqueur
Add three shots of bourbon
Stir about 15 times (do not shake)
Strain into the martini glass.
The Bear does not use garnishes, but will use a luxardo cherry if available. Some prefer a twist of lemon. You can modify the amounts of Averna Amaro and walnut liqueur to suit your taste.
